The Bell & Buckner Football Symposium wrapped up on Saturday July 18th. I want to reiterate how strongly I feel that if you are in the Charlotte area and have a child that plays football, you really need to work this camp into your schedule. The character development aspects alone are worth the price. I challenge you to find any camp or child care for $75. Below is a recap of Noah's week:
(rest of this entry is after the quote...)Champions aren't made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them -- a desire, a dream, a vision.
- Muhammad Ali, American Boxer
As I said in my "Day 1" recap, although he is 10 we placed Noah in the 11 and over group. This allowed him to really get the most from the camp. He held his own all week in drills, quickly gaining the respect of his peers by his effort. By the second day they started calling him "Speedy".
On Friday, all age groups went on a Community Service project, where they helped with the beautification efforts at a Charlotte Park. The kids picked up debris, re-added mulch around trees and bushes, etc. Sowing the seeds of volunteerism in our youth, what could be better?
Saturday the camp had its closing ceremonies. The parents were given a small glimpse of the talks the kids received on a daily basis. You may have noticed I include a randomly selected quote on each post. During Saturday's talk, I heard a quote that the kids had discussed earlier in the week that I would like to share with you:
Watch your thoughts, they become your words. Watch your words, they become your actions. Watch your actions they become habits. Watch your habits, they become character. Watch your character, it becomes your destiny.
--Patrick Overton
Three players from each of the three age groups were given trophies based on their skill level and effort on the field as well as the their character on and off the field. I apologize that I can't remember each award. I will post them when I get that information. There was one special/top award that was given to a young man that had been teased all week for his long hair. It wasn't until Saturday everyone found out he's growing his hair to donate it for the creation of wigs for cancer patients. He received a standing ovation that lasted nearly 5 minutes.
Noah was awarded the "I am Joseph" award for the "Jr High" age group. Here are the details for the "I am Joseph" award:
This award is for the individual who demonstrates strong beliefs. They not only strived to do what was right but also to do it the right way. This player displays a high level of teamwork, leadership and great integrity in addition to statistical results. This individual is able to make those around them better during practice and games on and off the field. Through obedience and faithfulness they have been blessed with destiny and vision.
I have also included a few more pictures from the week. I was only able to attend late afternoon sessions so my picture taking was limited.
